SPEAKER_01

Hi everyone, this is Rainbow, they she. And I'm Em, and this is Sex Cells, a heated rivalry podcast. Today we're talking about episode 5. I'll Believe in Anything. I wish I could do the doo doo doo doo doo. I know this isn't about your aunt that watches Fox News. Because I'll believe in anything.

SPEAKER_00

I see what you did there.

SPEAKER_01

Unfortunately.

SPEAKER_00

This is a jam-packed episode. So much happens. So much. So and there's literally so much, no room for sex scenes. Yes. The sex is not selling this episode. It is the highest rated, I think, of all five episodes.

SPEAKER_01

Or all six episodes. I'll say it right at the top. You know, we've talked about before about the discourse of how this is just a gay porn show. This is just fetish content. Bullshit. And I think it was really satisfying. The timing of that discourse was really at its height. And then here comes episode five, which is all about basically the situationship ending and the feelings beginning, and there's not a single sex scene to be found. Are you happy now, you pilgrims?

SPEAKER_00

And not because they don't have sex, because they do. We get to see the aftermath of it. It's just unlike in those first two episodes, and even in the last episode, where the sex is telling us something about where they are in their relationship. We don't need that sex because now they're being open and honest and they're talking to each other and we're getting to hear it from their mouths rather than having to see it through their bodies.

SPEAKER_01

And this is the perfect time to mention our fanfic tags, which guess what? I think I forgot them last episode, right? Yes, you did. And what were they for last episode? Do we remember? I don't have them pulled up right in front of me. You think I'm gonna remember? That was a whole week ago. It was like hashtag angst. Anyway, it's not important, but we're here now. So the fic tags for this episode are hashtag fluff, hashtag feelings realization. Mm-hmm. Hashtag coming out. Hashtag the beard has fallen off within the first 15 minutes of the episode.

SPEAKER_00

I really love this show, it's just like, listen, we know like it seems like Rose is between our two boys right now, but actually you don't have to worry about that because Rose is immediately clocking Shane's queerness. And she is clocking out of this relationship. Yes. Do we want to get into that scene?

SPEAKER_01

We're doing it. Yeah, so we start the episode off with uh Rose waking up and having to go for her pickup time and Shane apologizing for not performing last night. And Rose is like, that's okay, let's have dinner this week. You don't know that this is your HR, we're firing you dinner.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, this is the relationship is over because you don't actually want to be with me. This whole dinner, too. I mean, Rose is a real class act. She really is. I do have a question. Why is this happening in a public setting?

SPEAKER_01

Well, it's I'm gonna give the benefit of the doubt. They're in this like dimly lit, they're sat away from everyone. It's probably one of those restaurants that hosts, you know, celebs and they're discreet or whatever. Good enough point for sure. But also, maybe, you know, you don't know how the conversation's gonna go.

SPEAKER_00

You know what? I think that's fair. Actually, from Rose's perspective, it is just like, hey, I'm about to insinuate that this hockey player that plays a super masculine sport is gay. Maybe I want to have witnesses. I don't think he's gonna be that way, but you literally never know, no matter how nice a guy is, you just never know if that's gonna happen.

SPEAKER_01

It's funny though, because I I did think because we we rewatched it last night just for a refresher, and I was like, imagine if the waiter came at any point during this conversation.

SPEAKER_00

There's definitely been some like TikToks and reels I've seen that's like POV, you're the waiter, and it's like the the scene like playing, like the audio in the background and like the waitress about to walk up and then hearing something and just being like, I'm gonna go back to the kitchen.

SPEAKER_01

I like being the hole rather than the peg. I'll be right back with those fries.

SPEAKER_00

I do think I think you can kind of see, I think when they pull out, I think it's like the very end of the meal. I think they've like eaten a nice dinner together.

SPEAKER_01

Um that's good. It drives me nuts when in shows they do it right at the beginning of the meal. You still have a meal to eat. Yes. It's it's dinner time. But yeah, I really love Rose's Rose's kind of awkward approach. She's like, so gay people, huh?

SPEAKER_00

Like it's very much that. Well, it's funny because she brings up Miles first, which I think is interesting considering the role that Miles played in last episode with like being the gayness right behind Shane the whole time that he can't escape. And so she uses Miles as her like gay friend to be like, so gay people exist. I know one. Um, and Shane kind of like I do you think he's acting like he doesn't know that that Miles is gay, or do you think he really didn't clock?

SPEAKER_01

He might have really just not clocked it, you know. I think I think what this really does is spot spotlight how like uncomfortable just Shane is with the whole topic.

SPEAKER_00

And Hudson does such an excellent job of performing here. Like you can really just see the way you he gets that like scared animal look in his eyes sometimes. Like he got it when JJ said the like if Rosanoff fucks you, I'll fuck him back. And he's like, We're not fucking.

SPEAKER_01

It's just so sad that there's so much fear there. And thank God, like Rose is who she is, because you know, she'll say later on she's had a bunch of gay boyfriends from theater. So I think that really also informs why, you know, Rose is also just what I like about a lot of these female characters is they're very self-assured and confident. She's not taking like an ego bruise that the guy she's been sleeping with is actually probably gay. She's done this before, and she just like they actually like each other as people. They do love each other. I think that's what makes this conversation easier than it m would have been with really anyone else.

SPEAKER_00

She's handling this with so much compassion, kindness, respect for Shane as a person.

SPEAKER_01

Even the way she lets him kind of say, like, she asks these questions that's really just curious about him. Like, was it better with the guy? Da-da-da. And we get these heartbreaking flashbacks.

SPEAKER_00

I love this. Yeah, we get like, have you ever been with another guy? And then it's Ilya in the showers, and then was it different with another guy? And then they're kissing in the stairs, that slow, beautiful, romantic kiss because they were already in love by episode two. And then the was it better? And then it's him like rushing to kiss Ilya. And I love that that's all from episode one and two. Yeah. Like that's all from the very beginning. I was gonna say it's all from episode one, but the kiss and the stairs is episode two, but still.

SPEAKER_01

And it breaks my heart how you know I think Rose at one point says it's okay, and he's like, it's not. And it's not okay that he's been lying to her, but I think it's also like it's not okay that I'm gay, and it just makes me so sad.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's the thing about the show. There's so many like layers to a lot of these things the characters are saying. And I do appreciate her, like, because I think it, you know, I think it kind of is okay because I don't think Shane knew he was gay really. He was trying. And he, yeah, he like really couldn't admit to himself that like he does just want to drink ginger ale. Yes. Um, and and I I do wonder with Rose, do you think this is the first boy she's had to tell him he's gay? I don't know. Because that's interesting. Maybe the second. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe he's so good at it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the first one she was like, hey, maybe I'm not really doing it for you.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. And I think both the actors really handle this kind of awkward conversation well. I've seen people say that that whole, like, I prefer being the the whole is such a weird line, but Shane delivers it delivers it so well.

SPEAKER_00

He really, it does feel like he's like, he's kind of like laughing, like, because he is funny. Yes. And so that's that's coming out because he really is so comfortable with Rose. That's why he felt so comfortable, like getting into this like kind of fake relationship almost with her, or something he was trying to make real, is because like they really couldn't can be best friends. That's why I love the end of the dinner when they're saying goodbye, and she's like, no, let's be friends, like real friends, like best friends. Like she they do get along really well, and we get to see that later in the episode. And it's just like so beautiful. Like, once again, the story's just like, hey, you see this amazing female character, she's great.

SPEAKER_01

And Shane finally, like, Hayden is a great friend to Shane, but this is a friend that knows a part this part of Shane, the only other person aside from Ilya now, and that's gotta feel really good. And it's really important to have that.

SPEAKER_00

Like, you have to be able to talk to it's like what it's like you have to be able to talk to somebody that you're not like actively fucking about, like fucking them.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, hello.

SPEAKER_00

Are you kidding me? It's why it was so important for Kip to like feel like he could talk about Scott with his friends and his dad and why he like was being so isolated from them. So he's like, I can't share this with them. And you want to be able to share when you're happy, you want to be able to share it with the people you love. It's like why people have weddings, yes. Or one of the reasons at least. Um, also, I just have to say, the do you like kissing me? Sure. Oh yes, I'm glad you brought that up. Sure. Wow. I and Rose's look, she's like, okay, uh-huh. And did you hear yourself just now? Yeah, like, oh my god. And he really tries. He tries to like hold on as long as he can, and then she's finally just like, no man, we we have to admit it. And then he does, and he just there's like a like a relief in his eyes.

SPEAKER_01

I am sure it feels like a weight lifted. Well, actually, I know because I've been in that spot before, and it does it's like a weight lifted off your shoulder. So I'm so glad it went so well. And then it went it now, it's over. Now we can move on from this Rose uh experiment.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, really. Yeah, and so now we move in, and you just like see like the confidence that Shane moves through the rest of this episode with that I really appreciate. Um, like there is like a power in accepting who you are. Like, this is like not this isn't necessarily even Shane coming out to Rose. This is Shane coming out to himself. Yes. And that's very powerful. Because then, cats and dogs! It's East versus West, baby!

SPEAKER_01

Yes, and oh my god, before I do want to just because after this, we then get Ilya and his uh emotional support female friend. Oh my god, yes, let's talk about Svetlana. Well, because they're watching and they're talking about the East versus West game coming up, and Svetlana is flexing all her hockey knowledge, and then she we get two very important things. We get she brings up Hollander and how he's good, and Ilya gives a very nothing response, and she's like, You know he's good, and you know he's attractive, or something like that. Yes, and then she like is like figuring out how they could play together, and it's like um he's like, Oh, well, Shane can't be wing, and she's like, Well, you can, and he's like, What you would have him center me? And she's like, It's what the people want, it's very cute moment.

SPEAKER_00

I love yeah, I love that moment, his playfulness coming out.

SPEAKER_01

But if that feels like like Svetlana knows yes, something is up, and I think she started to put together who Jane just might be.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it really feels like it's like almost like a mirror of the moment we just had because I would say Rose and Svetlana share woman of the day for this episode. And it really is, she's like, she's almost trying to have that own version of her conversation with Ilya, but she's like, Okay, you're not ready to talk about that yet. Also, we learn that Ilya has stopped smoking.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, yeah, such a little detail, but then he must have started up again once Rose entered the picture.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, now that he doesn't have to worry about Shane making a little comment, which he loves to hear. Um, but yeah, now it's East versus West, and we're in Florida. Yeah, we're in Florida, and we start with Ilya, and he is looking around this bar. You know he's just like terminator, slight terminator stare, where is Shane? I know I'm gonna have to see him.

SPEAKER_01

He is so ready, and here Shane comes, and you can see kind of Shane uh Ilya say a little something to himself of like, all right, okay, like psychic himself up. Here he comes. And Ilya, with the subtlety of a hippopotamus, tries to get Shane to tell him if if Rose is about.

SPEAKER_00

I think this is so interesting because Ilya doesn't usually need to pull information out of Shane. Usually it's the opposite. Shane is trying to give him information about his life, and Ilya has to shut it down because we don't talk about that stuff, we just have sex, but now he like needs to know. And he's trying, I think, his typical communication style of like saying something but meaning another thing, and he keeps trying that and trying that, and Shane is just so autistic, it doesn't work. And so finally he just has to ask, like, so you and Rose Landry, hello, hello, I'm trying to ask if you still have a girlfriend. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Well, it's adorable because I think, especially in the Svetlana scene, she says something about how stylish Rose is, and here comes Shane looking really good. So he's like, Who dressed you all this shit? And then Shane adorably actually confides that he got a stylist.

SPEAKER_00

I love that moment so much. We actually get to see Connor's story for a moment. In that smile. In that smile when he's laughing at Shane for having a stylist. It's so it's just like this like beautiful, minute transformation. And then he goes right back to Ilya of like, no, I love it.

SPEAKER_01

But then, yeah, he's like, so Rose isn't here, huh? Like we were sitting watching the TV, like, where's Rose? Like, just ask the question you want to ask. And then Shane tells him, like, we weren't compatible. And you can see Ilya log that word later to to double check the meaning of.

SPEAKER_00

But you see, like, he does look like he's like excited. He's happy. He's like, oh my god, Rose isn't here. Maybe we can go back to how things were. We can go back to like right before we said each other's names on that couch, like before the tuna melt. No, it's okay, we can revert. You can be holider again. I'll be Rosenov and we'll fuck after this. Yes. But Shane isn't gonna let that happen. I want to talk for just a second before we move on from the bar scene to the framing of this scene because when they're in a wide shot, it's like head on of them sitting at the bar together, and there's two bowls of fruit, and one is they're they're kind of like they're not perfectly symmetrical. One's a little bit closer to Shane, where the one on Ilias' side is like in the corner of the bar. And I feel like it being closer to Shane, like maybe I'm just maybe this is corn plating too much, but it just feels like Shane is like now like more accepting and like open with his sexuality and ready to like really explore like the deeper aspects of that, and Ilias still isn't, because we see that through the rest of the episode. Like now it's more like Shane is like ahead in a way.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. Now Shane's gonna kind of be the pursuer, but not just to for sex. We gotta talk about our feel-I've been wanting to talk about my feelings all damn day. And you're gonna sit there and you're gonna listen. For really the past 10 years, I think he's been willing to talk about feelings to an extent, but now he's actually ready. And yes, and and we get the fluffiest little montage between between Ilya just really showing off at the pool of how domestic and cute he is for Omega Shane. He's pregnant at this pool 100%. Yes. Oh my god, playing with the kids, it's adorable, obviously. And then we see flashes of them playing and they get to play together, which, like, I have a note here. This is one of those moments where I do lament how little time we have with six episodes because this whole East versus West game could have been a whole episode of them kind of coming back to each other and just getting to enjoy, like the world has put them together for the first time. And we also want to talk about how a fandom was definitely born that game.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god. Well, I mean, at the very least in David Hollander's mind.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, because he's like, Oh, that game, you had so much chemistry. And they do, and we see Ilya gives them a little kiss on the helmet and they stare at each other for a really gay amount of time. But you know, especially knowing in the real world, how big hockey is in the fanfic world. Ilya and Shane was always a very niche corner of the fandom, but you knew they blew up that day in universe.

SPEAKER_00

I just feel like this, I now need I need like a like the scene from K-pop Demon Hunter where the girl brings like the fan art to Ginu and Rumi and like has the shirt and is like, your secret is safe with me. Like, if we don't get that in season two, I don't know. Uh I mean we absolutely need to. I also want to talk about the difference between this little like montage cutting back and forth versus what we got in the beginning of episode four, where it's like hockey sex, hockey, sex, and now it's like hockey, just the most adorable thing you've ever seen. Hockey, just the most adorable thing you've ever seen. The tone is absolutely shifting.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And we culminate to this scene on the beach. Oh, with that big beautiful screen.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that fooled me. Definitely. I mean, listen, they got they they really did a great job.

SPEAKER_01

It's their last night there, and Shane's like, what room were you in, baby girl? And we have Ilya looking over his shoulder before they touch hands.

SPEAKER_00

I know, and like, yeah, creeping his hand closer and so that they can rub their thumbs together because they missed each other. And like, I think Ilya really is just like, okay, we can we can we can go back, we can keep doing what we were doing.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, specifically, we can go back to before the emotions because then Shane comes to his hotel room later and that guard is up. Yes. And especially because Shane comes with a mission, he wants to talk about feelings and things, and I think Ilya he senses this. He's like, This looks serious.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then I think it's interesting that Shane says, Can you sit down or something? And Ilya's like, Yes, I will lean against this dresser to show how calm and relaxed and not at all freaked out by how serious you're being.

SPEAKER_01

And I'll be far away from you in this tiny room.

SPEAKER_00

And also I feel like still maintaining like a level of like dominance and control.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, exactly. But then he disarms him by starting with like, I think I'm gay, and this Ilya chuckles and like I get why. It's like, oh really? But then it's like, yeah, no, I'm actually like a hundred percent. I'm not like you. I can't just have a cover girlfriend.

SPEAKER_00

I need dick in my butt. And I think this is the first time he said I'm gay out loud, at least to another person.

SPEAKER_01

And I think it, you know, after that initial reaction, it lands on Ilya that okay, no, this is like serious and real, and he he joins Shane on the bed.

SPEAKER_00

And yeah, and then I like the way that Shane approaches like talking about that last time. Like it was last time it was nice, and Ilya's like, it was. And Shane says, It felt like we were something. And Ilya immediately says, We can't be something, Hollander.

SPEAKER_01

I think that's such a good peek into his psyche. I think he has been shutting down his own heart this entire time. He has these feelings, but to him, it's like, well, what's the point in them with Russia and my big daddy shadowing over me? There is no us, there cannot be us. So I'm not even gonna go there.

SPEAKER_00

And I really appreciate that, like, for the audience at least, like this is the first time Shane's really seeing that. But we as the audience, I think we've gotten to see that from the beginning. We've got, and I think that's why it's so hard for me to look at Ilya and be like, oh, he's just being so bad to Shane, blah, blah, blah. It's like, no, it's like I understand where this is coming from. It's not okay that he's treating Shane like this, and it's not okay that Shane is feeling bad about these things. But I'm really proud of Shane for finally like standing up and standing up for himself and demanding that conversation.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, I was so relieved when he was like, I don't think I can pretend I don't like you anymore. Because I think where I get frustrated with the slow burn trope sometimes, especially in fanfic, is it drags and it drags and it fucking drags. And hey, we've had 10 years of it, but the show hasn't like dragged us through it. And once they have this feelings conversation, it's the slow burn kind of stops. Yeah. And I'm just like, thank God. Like it has to have an endpoint. And I was, I was just so glad, like finally we're just saying this out loud.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, oh my god, yeah, because I I just love like the whole moment because like Shane, Ilya says we can't be something, Hollander, and Shane keeps pushing. He's like, What would you want to be if we could? We can't. That's not what I asked. What does it fucking matter?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, he starts to really, and then yeah, and I don't like I and then he's like, I think I like you a little too much, and Ilya's like, don't fucking do this, probably because in his heart he's leaping and bounding with hope. But that hope is painful immediately because he really feels like they can't do anything about it.

SPEAKER_00

And he tries to shut Shane down. And I think we also see some of the like, I think Ilya probably struggles with some like, I don't know if self-hatred is like, I don't know if that's too strong, but like Shane says, like, I like the thing about liking him, and he's like, You don't like me. Yeah, it's like, why not? And it's like, of what are you talking about? Of course he does, but I wouldn't like that face. Exactly. And then he gets like he gets so emotional and he's being so vul vulnerable. And then Shane like really starts questioning, like, why? Why can't we be like this? And he's like, I wouldn't be able to go home. Because Russia! Because of Russia, and like his dad is police, his brother is police, his mom is dead.

SPEAKER_01

And the fact that this is the first time they're having this kind of conversation in 10 years, Shane didn't even know about his mom until now.

SPEAKER_00

And not for lack of trying from Shane's point. It's just Ilya's finally opening up about it, and I'm sure having to say the sh dead is like so hard for him. And he tries to dismiss it of like, I was young. Of course, yeah, he was young, but it we don't know just how fucking traumatic it was anyway. Like, yeah, we'll get we'll get deeper into that when when Ilya feels safer being more vulnerable, but he's still like and I think his dad being alive is like a big part of it. Like even though his dad it has dementia and isn't really like there anymore. And and Ilya says that as well. He also opens up about that and how his dad is sick. And I thought it was interesting that Shane immediately went to like sick as in crazy.

SPEAKER_01

I know, maybe because he maybe assuming that this is where all this fear is coming from. I think that makes sense.

SPEAKER_00

I think within the context of the conversation. I know people do kind of like it's like crazy cancer? Like Shane just let him answer. Well, that's just like that's Shane just being like, Well, I need to understand exactly what's going on. And I think you have to do that with Ilya because Ilya is constantly trying to do the whole like not really saying what he's fe what he means kind of thing. And so Shane's just like asking him directly. Yeah, he kind of needs that straightforward energy. So I think the last thing I want to touch on for this scene is just first of all, Connor's performance when he starts tearing up. You know, he's like so overwhelmed with these emotions that he normally doesn't let himself feel, but he does feel safe, I think, with Shane. And and Shane's really allowing him that space. And so he like and he looks away and he apologizes. Like he's like, because you know, I'm sure in his household you are not allowed to show emotion, you are only allowed to be angry. Very, very patriarchal. The patriarchy strikes. Again. Um, but Shane says it's okay, and he crawls into his lap, not for sex, but for comfort, and gives him a sweet kiss and just holds him and they rock on the bed together, and it's so beautiful.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's a real like they've wanted this. Yeah. And then we cut to Shane about to leave, and it's clear that they've had sex, but we don't get to see because it was too intimate even for our eyes.

SPEAKER_00

Like, I j I think I said this last night when we were doing our rewatch of like, I think it would be hard to watch something so romantic and intimate on the screen.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. I would have liked to see it.

SPEAKER_00

I s yeah, I mean, listen, I would still like to see it as well, but you know, we just we don't have time because we've got to get to a dead dad.

SPEAKER_01

We've got we've got a dead dad on the menu. I'll be like, okay, now we're romantic and your dad's dead. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And we have had like, he's been ignoring calls from his brother. Yes. So we have Boston playing a game, and we really just see the locker room and Ilya, like, you know, ignoring a call from his brother and then joking with his team. And then they come back, it's either halftime or at the end of the game, and he finally picks up the phone phone and says, like, in Russian, like, what? And then it cuts, and you know, dad's dead. It's like if you've been watching the show, you're aware, okay, Alexi's been calling this whole time because there's something going on with his dad. His dad's dead. And then we find out that Ilya is gone the next day in the Montreal's locker room because JJ says, Hey, did you hear what happened to Rosanov? Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_01

Um, and Shane has no chill because they're like, was he hurt? And and Shane was like, No, he's fine. And like, is he this? No, no. It's like Shane, you can't be this knowledgeable about Lily. What are you doing? But now he he texts Ilya and doesn't hear back for a while until he's snug in his bed with his little reading glasses on. And then I love, listen, I'm sure they were in some random room in Canada, but the set design really did a great job of like the like tapestry and the vodka and the leather couch and the black tank top. It was all giving Russia very well.

SPEAKER_00

They did, yeah. Listen, I you know what? I sh I should have shouted this person out earlier when I was talking about that bar scene, but this is a great time to talk about the production designer for the show, Aiden LaRue. You cooked. You cooking.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, so Ilya confirms his dad is dead, and he takes it to kind of just a sexual place. I think so fresh off of it. He doesn't want to talk yet. He just wants to see Shane in his glasses, shirtless, which you know that's his right.

SPEAKER_00

Well, and he's also he's clearly been drinking, so I don't think he's really in the place. And I think he just I I think it's I don't know, to me, this does seem like it's different from like the times before. Like it doesn't seem necessary that he's like avoiding the conversation as much as like sometimes when you are like feeling those feelings, sometimes it is nice to just feel that closeness with someone. Yes. I also just have to say that I knew when we saw Shane in glasses in episode two that Ilya was absolutely gonna lose his mind when he saw Shane in those glasses. He does look good in them, and yeah, and so immediately when he was like, You wear glasses, and it's like, yeah, I know you like it. I know you think he's cute. Um, okay, do we want to talk about the intense Russian funeral? Yeah, what a ball that looked like. Yeah, it looked like it looked like the meal like after the funeral. And I do want to note because they frame at one point they have like pretty prominent in the frame a piece of like black bread on top of a glass of vodka. And I found an article on PBS that talked about it, and it is the reversal of the traditional Russian custom of breaking black bread when we meeting someone for the first time. So instead of like, because you break it when you meet them, and now you're saying goodbye to this person, and so that like you leave out as a totem. And I I really I think death rituals are so fascinating, and I really love learning about them, and I love that we get to see that moment.

SPEAKER_01

Um, and it's just it's very heavy, very um, even like the music choice is like in the background, and then we have Alexi staring his brother down, yeah, sitting next to his daughter, who's just like there to remind us that time has passed.

SPEAKER_00

The last time we saw her, she was a baby. Yeah, yeah. And so I think I want to talk about Alexi. Let's talk about this stupid bitch because we've really we've mentioned him, but I really have feel like we haven't like dove into him as a character. Yeah, he's Ilya's older brother, which shame on you.

SPEAKER_01

He is a fucking like freeloader who's been living and partying on Ilya's dime. And you know, this is another thing where we don't get a lot of Ilya's family dynamic in the show, as I think there's a lot more context in the book. Yeah. But there's a lot of I think resentment from childhood of Ilya was probably the goal, the talented, better looking brother. And then that resentment just kept building, and then there was like this entitlement once Ilya started to make the money of like, yeah, where's where because he's asking for crazy amounts of money, all while being a huge asshole, too. And he continues at the dad's funeral dinner. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And I just want to say the actor, um, Slavik Rogazine, who just is playing a thankless role very well, he does a great job of being an asshole. And I do, I just want to talk for a second about the idea that he's been like snorting away all of Ilya's money this whole time. I think it'll be interesting to read the book to see. But I will say from what we see in the show, yes, in that first phone call when he calls Illy and asks for money, he's partying, he's doing Coke, he's like, I want to buy more drugs. But then the second time we see them having a phone call, he's like it's daytime, he's with his baby and his baby mama. I don't know if they're married yet. And I did wonder if at some point it kind of does transition from like he's snorting all the money away to he's like relying on this money to raise his family. Yeah. Like, I don't know how much money he gets from his job, and like maybe it he is like spending some of it on drugs. But like, I think that's why when they start to get in their fight and Ilya says, like, who lives off of all my money? And Alexi says, like, I have a daughter and a wife. It's like, I wonder if that's like where some of that resentment is coming from. Is like, I have to rely on you, pretty boy, to take care of my family.

SPEAKER_01

And whose fucking fault is that? Because it sounds like Alexi really just followed his father's footsteps into being a police, and I don't know how much a Russian policeman makes. I can't imagine it's a fortune. But I think, yeah, as a young man, he got very comfortable living off of Ilya. And now I think it's really hitting him. It's like, I'm a fully grown person with a family and my dad. And I think Ilya and his dad he lived off of, but now dad's dead, and I think that's a real wake-up for him. And now all he has is this brother that he's been a fucking shit to his whole life.

SPEAKER_00

And that he continues to be a shit to. I the interaction between them when like because Ilya leaves the table and like goes through like the beaded curtain into the side room for to just collect himself, and then Alexi follows, which is the last thing Ilya wanted. And Alexi like pushes Ilya, but then when Ilya tries to defend himself, Alexi like shushes him and points to the other room, implying, like, don't make a scene at dad's funeral, even though you're the one who started it. And I think that moment really shows like this is the dynamic they've had. Like, Alexi is a bully, but then he makes Ilya feel like shit if Ilya like makes a scene defending himself or calling him out. Yes, yes. I just don't get his audacity at all.

SPEAKER_01

Because yeah, I mean, he really is just like Ilya's like, wait, what do you want? And he's just wondering what his fucking plan is. I mean, this guy's such a fucking loser.

SPEAKER_00

He's really a loser. He's really just like, he's just a dud. He just doesn't know how to take care of himself, has never tried to learn how to take care of himself.

SPEAKER_01

And now he's gonna use the one decent thing he's done, which is been there to take care of his father. And really that's just the case because you were there physically to hold over Ilya and make him feel guilty. Like, so what now do I what do I do?

SPEAKER_00

I'm a grown man, but it's up to you. And can we really say it's a decent thing that he did when Ilya had to pay him to do it?

SPEAKER_01

And it seems like he was absent a lot because there was a lot of Ilya being like, where the fuck is Alexi? So yeah, no, he's a fucking piece of shit. And then here comes Felana to like ease the tension because obviously she heard that. And fucking this piece of shit is like says some rude shit about like insults her. Yeah, insults her, and then I I do love though that Ilya finally fucking like goes after his brother.

SPEAKER_00

And I think it makes sense that Ilya that this is what would set Ilya off because he's like, he's just again, he's such a caretaker.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, and like I was just gonna say, as someone who is used to being the victim of abuse, you get used to taking it, but then seeing a loved one who doesn't deserve it, that's when you can kind of go into like, oh, I'll fuck you up.

SPEAKER_00

That's I'm very much I'm kind of that kind of person. Like I find it a little harder to stand up for myself, but if somebody that I love is being picked on, you best believe I'm I'm getting up there. And yeah, like Ilya will let his brother treat him like shit, but the moment he says one word against Fetlana, it's over. And again, the actor who plays Alexa, you see the fear in his eyes. He's like, Oh yeah, my brother's a hockey player and has beats the shit out of people for a living.

SPEAKER_01

Like, are you the stupidest person in the world? I really like he should have killed you and I would have cheered it on.

SPEAKER_00

Like, oh my god. And yet Ilya is a better man than I because he shows so much compassion to Alexi later when he's talking on the phone with Jane. I mean, in the moment, and I think I love that he finally cuts ties. He's like, you know what? You can have my apartment, you can have somewhere to live, it's paid for. My niece will have a trust for when she turns 18. Alexi better not fucking try to get any money from her after she turns 18. I do think it's sad that Ilya is losing this potential relationship with his niece. I don't know how much they like got along. Like we see later he's sending gifts for her with Svetlana. So, like, I think that would be interesting to know more about. And maybe we'll learn more in season two.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, maybe, because she's probably still a kid, like 10 or whatever. So that's still like a pure relationship he can have. That is heartbreaking.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but but he's like gone a lot, so who knows what their relationship even is right now. And I'm who even knows the kind of shit that Alexi is talking around his daughter about Ilya. But yeah, but then later, and I want to get to the phone call and like really break that down. But I also just want to talk about what Ilya says about Alexi to Shane. Yes. Because he says to he's like, My brother, like, my brother, I don't know, he's scared and it brings the worst out in him, and it brings the worst out in me too. And it's like, wow, the compassion, because the way I would be talking so much fucking shit about that bitch after what he just pulled, I'd be like, that little motherfucker, listen to what he just did. But Ilya is better than me and has more compassion.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, Ilya does show a lot of emotional intelligence with this whole thing because I, you know, I am lucky enough to have both my parents, but I know like losing, especially they already have lost their mom, so now losing their their last parent and now being orphans in this world has to be such a tailspin. And they're each reacting so differently.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, that phone call.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god, yeah. So Ilya goes to the tunnel, yes, which exists in Canada, and people have gone there and like people have written things on the wall, like quotes from the show on the wall. It's really sweet. Um, but yeah, he's in this uh quote unquote Russian tunnel.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, just talking to Shane on the phone and like really like you know, Shane left that door open for him of like you can come to me for comfort. Yeah. And Ilya's like walking through it, and I think that's beautiful. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I love Shane is so great. He I love his line of, is it very upsetting? Which is such a like it's kind of an awkward line, but it it's so hard to talk to a grieving person sometimes because at least for myself, it's like you want to say the right thing, you don't really know what that is. But really, you just want to give them an opportunity to express themselves. And I think Shane does that really well here, and then invites him to like, you know, because Elya's trying, and I can't even imagine trying to like translate in your head when you're grieving.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I think Connor does a good job of like showing that with the way he's speaking. He's like haunt, he's struggling to find words.

SPEAKER_01

And I will say, it is interesting, like he starts to say like about his dad, I wish he could know me. And that really lets in like just this like grief of like you really do grieve two relationships the relationship you actually had, and then the relationship you could have had. Yeah, the relationship you wanted. Yeah, and even though he's struggling to ex express that, I'm getting that. But then Shane is like, just say what you need to say in Russian, and I won't understand it, but I can listen to your sexy voice say Russian things. We all win.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and it's so beautiful, and it's true that like expressing yourself and saying what's like weighing your heart down, what's on your mind, there is a release in that. Like speech can be an action, and and it's so beautiful. And then Connor just does this incredible performance that several Russian people have like co-signed that you know it really he did very well. Connor does such a good job of really portraying the emotion, even when speaking in another language, he's really acting his ass off and also speaking in Russian because I think earlier the scene with Alexi when he's like yelling at him, you can hear just years of rage and hurt coming through. And then you hear it again in the phone call, the bullsha, bullsha, bullsha. I love that line so much. And it's so good. And then, you know, he's talking about like how his family treats him, and then he's talking about having no one, but then he does have one someone. Svetlana. Svetlana, and I really wish we could have seen the look on Chain's face when he heard Svetlana's name mentioned. What do you? I think he would, I think he's able to put the jealousy aside, but still it's like you're bringing up Svetlana again.

SPEAKER_01

That's how I feel too. I know. I'm sure he probably noted it, but like I don't think he was actually that.

SPEAKER_00

That's not what the scene is about. Right. The scene is about Ilya, I think, recognizing for the first time because we didn't, we completely glossed over the Svetlana Ilya moment. How dare we?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, we did, so we got ahead of ourselves because yeah, Svetlana finally kind of just says it. And it's so interesting. Again, just these women who are so like they don't need these men to be validated. I think a different kind of character would be more hurt because Ilya's like, I love you. He's like, I love you too, but you don't want me.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But she's okay with like she's trying to be like, I see what's happening with you, and that Shane is a lucky is knows how lucky he is. Well, she says Jane. But then she says Shane at the last of this. She says Jane and then she says it again, but it sounds a little bit more like Shane.

SPEAKER_00

I definitely always thought she said I thought she was saying Jane every time. Okay. Listeners write in. Um, because I yeah, it feels like she's trying to like give him that like plausible deniability of just like I or not plausible denial deniability, but like I think she's trying to like just let him know in that language that he speaks of like, I know, I know what's happening. Like I hope Jane knows how lucky he is and like recognizing she knows who that is. Yeah, and I love the like because she says you don't want me like you want Jane, and it's okay, and I believe it. She's like, it's really okay. I don't know. There's to me, there's no like her like mourning the relationship they could have had because I don't think she wanted that with him.

SPEAKER_01

Well, and they had it's not like they couldn't have been doing that this whole time.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like yeah, if she won, I mean Svetlana seems like the kind of woman who goes for what she wants. Like if she wanted that with Ilya, I think she would have made that clear. Um, but yeah, and I think so this is Ilya going back to the phone call. Ilya's realizing that like Svetlana like loves him for who he is and sees him and accepts him in the same way that I think Rose provided for Shane at the beginning of the episode. Um, and so now and now he's able to admit, at least in Russian, that he loves Shane. That's the problem.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I love Svetlana, but not like I love you. And that's the problem. It's always you.

SPEAKER_00

And it's just, and we're all freaking the fuck out. Everyone, everyone, everyone around the globe who had access to this as it was coming out.

SPEAKER_01

And I love people clown on this too, how Shane was just listening with his eyes closed, but it's like, yeah, I'm sure he's just like in that moment with Ilya, and it doesn't even matter that he doesn't technically understand what he's saying, but he's just getting lost in his voice.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he just I think he feels the emotion.

SPEAKER_01

And it's interesting, like being with someone who speaks a different language and like getting to just listen to them speak in in their like comfortable first, like, yeah, it's it's a cool thing to just sit and listen to.

SPEAKER_00

Well, and I think the show just does such a good job of like seeding things because throughout the the episodes, we've had Shane making comments about Ilya's like grasp on English and getting better, and like the like, I know the word for father in Russian, like that sort of thing. Like, we're really like naturally building towards this moment. And it's just damn good storytelling. Also, I just want to say that Ilya is so nervous about saying all of this on the phone to Shane, and he's like looking around, but it's like no one's gonna know that you're talking to a man, no one's gonna know who you're talking to. But homophobia is just such a bitch, and like really just is this cloud that like sits on top of you that like even when you're having like a like one of the most vulnerable moments, you still have to look over your shoulder. Yeah, it's exhausting. It really is. Um, anyway, uh moving on to the bonk on the head.

SPEAKER_01

She got a bonk on the head. And it's so like it's so devastating because they're playing against first of all. I'm getting ahead of myself as usual, because I love the way that Shane approaches Ilya on the ice and is like, 1919, that's my room, the room that I'm staying at for us to have sex, and it's very much Well, no, it's not just it's not a hotel room.

SPEAKER_00

I think they're in Montreal. So he's giving him the code to his front door at his apartment. No more back door for you, baby. You're coming in the front.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and he says like front door, brave. Um, and then you know, Hayden's like, what was that all about?

SPEAKER_00

And Shane plays it off. Well, and I think it's interesting. You can tell that now that Shane has accepted his feelings for Ilya, like I think he's tired of playing into the rivalry, so he tells Hayden that Ilya being a dick is mostly an act. Yes. Yes, which I think is very interesting.

SPEAKER_01

He's done pretending in all the ways. Um, and to the point where he's smiling at Ilya on the ice like a fucking idiot, right before getting clocked. Unprofessional. I've gotta say, this wasn't Marlo's fault.

SPEAKER_00

This was 100% Shane's fault. He's not looking where he's going. And I think everyone knows that, even Hayden to a certain extent, but that's what you do when you're on the ice. You gotta protect your boy. I do.

SPEAKER_01

I love how immediately Hayden was like, you motherfucker, and started fighting. There's gonna be a rumor about you.

SPEAKER_00

I was just gonna say, you better watch out. But yeah, but then we have Ilya just like standing there, like watching over Shane. And you brought up as we were watching it last night, like right after he loses his dad, he just lost like a very complicated relationship, but it's still a very prominent relationship in his life. Yes. And now, like, just as he's like having these, like he's just had these vulnerable moments with Shane, and he's like, I don't want to lose you too. And like the ref has to push him off, and the commentators are like, Well, you know, these boys really respect each other. Clearly, a lot of admiration there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yes. They were great friends once.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, and then Shane, like mumbling, like, you gotta tell Ilya I'm gonna be okay. He's gonna worry.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I will say I do love this trope in like these sport romances where one of them gets hurt. I've written a fic myself of that nature, and then they get all worried, and it is very much that because then we get to Ilya coming to his hospital room and he's acting very cool, but you can tell. He like gets in there and he's like, I just um are you okay? Because you know that's just been in his mind the whole time. And Shane, who is high as a fucking kite. I this is like such a great little performance.

SPEAKER_00

Hudson Williams does a great job, and I've definitely heard before that like this surprised Jacob. Like, he didn't, I I think he wasn't sure how Hudson was gonna play it, or like Hudson approached and was like, I want to play it this way, and it was different from how Jacob had envisioned it. And I think it's just perfect because it's it's Shane uninhibited.

SPEAKER_01

That's exactly it. This is such a character who's always under such tight control over himself, so it is nice to see him be silly because there is the silliness to Shane that gets hinted at and referenced to, and it's fun to see like everything about it. It's very Hudson, and it's giving a little bit of Hudson personality.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yeah, we we get to see both Hudson and Connor come through for the the first real time, I feel like. Yeah, it's just it's so fun, just like, hey, hey, better.

SPEAKER_01

I was gonna ask you something. And I think I do know, I guess in the book, Ilya at this point was getting ready to end things.

SPEAKER_00

And I think that comes through in Connor's performance when he's like, maybe, maybe. Like you can tell he's like, God, I really want that, but like, and I can't break your heart right now, but like I'm gonna have to end this because it's gotten too real and I love you, and I can't be with you if I can't love you the way I want to. Yeah. Which is why it's so important what happens later. But I just there are a few other fun things I want to mention about the hospital scene. When the nurse walks in and she goes, Oh no, oh no. He's so annoyed. He's like, no, no. He's like, well, because and you can see the way he like, he has enough of his wits about him to be like, okay, gotta play the rivals now, gotta be. And he's like, uh I'll see you next season, Ilya. And Ilya's like, oh my god, you're doing bad at this. And he's like, shh, he's like, shh, behind the nurse's back. And then you can hear, as Ilya's leaving, Shane says to the nurse, like in a Russian accent, like, hello. He does a little hello to the nurse, and it's so funny. And I will say, one of my favorite TikToks that came out after this episode was like POV, you're the nurse, like helping Shane, where she's just like, she's like, oh, that was that was Ilya Rosanoff, right? Oh, you're oh, okay, okay. Um uh no, Mr. No, Mr. Hollander, you're not gonna be able to have sex for a few weeks after this.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god. Yeah, well, yeah, so then we jump ahead a little bit. Um, Shane is healing at his parents' house on the phone with Rose, who's like, you gotta tell them that we're not a thing anymore, baby.

SPEAKER_00

And final confirmation that she is, in fact, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique in the X-Men movies, because we've got the red wig. She's being painted the wrong color blue for copyright purposes, I'm sure. Yeah. With her little like makeup artist, um, who I I guess is under an NDA and isn't allowed to say anything that they hear in the trailers. Yeah, right. I mean, I assume that that's gotta be how it works. I think if you're gonna be like Right?

SPEAKER_01

Not really. Not not for like and I don't know if NDAs cover I I have no fucking idea.

SPEAKER_00

I don't yeah, I just I would I would think like or or maybe they just like have like a personal, like they have a good rul like working relationship and she knows she can trust this makeup artist because you're you're really talking on speakerphone about Shane being gay. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well maybe the makeup artist doesn't know anything about hockey.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, so then um yeah, Shane's talking to Rose and and it's really about like Rose being like, you should tell your parents we're not together anymore. And he's like, I don't want to lie to them, and she's like, Okay, well you kind of already are. Yeah. Um, but then we go back inside and we get hockey witch, you and a Hollander.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, well, she know she knows that Ilya is playing with his ribs hurt because she studies his every move because she's a little into him, and then she uh accurately predicts it's gonna be Scott Hunter's year, and then we've got Ilya and and uh Shane texting back and forth, and and Ilya is poking fun about Scott, which I have to mention now because it'll be relevant in just a moment. So a week later, the admirals do win, and the song begins.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, we hear that Wolf Parade song again that we heard at the beginning of episode three. Scott's like lifting the cup above the air, he's so excited, and he passes it off to Carter. The team's family start to come down on the ice, and there is nobody there for Scott.

SPEAKER_01

And then we go into that ending scene from a Cinderella story. Yes. And Scott calls him down, and this whole sequence is so funny. First of all, if Kip had been a girl, obviously the announcers would have immediately assumed a girlfriend was coming down onto the ice. But the announcers are kind of like watching this random guy come down, and they're like, the one guy's like, big for that fan if true. Not the big if true.

SPEAKER_00

I love this show, and everyone's like watching, like, what is happening? And we see Ilya and Shane watching, and we see them being like confused, like, what is he doing? And they're texting each other. It's like representation matters, dude.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, this is this is the highest-rated episode, I think, because of this ending scene, and also I think the most impactful episode. Yes, and it is really beautiful to see him like I know we were saying, like, Hunter, he's won the cup. Like, what do you have to fucking lose now? Kiss your man in front of everybody. Seeing the look on Shane and Ilya's faces are just like, ugh, and how many people in real life have felt similar?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, well, I just want to say with Scott Hunter, it's like he won the cup, he like this is a lifelong goal for him. And what does it really matter if he doesn't have anyone to celebrate it with? That part. And so Kip comes down and he comes on the ice and he almost slips a little because he's just in his little shoes. And he and Scott Hunter is so sweaty, and they must be in love for Kip to kiss him when he's that sweaty. Yeah, really. And then they kiss, and just the look on I think especially Ilya's face of like, I didn't know you could do that.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't know we were allowed. He immediately calls Shane and is like, I'm coming to the cottage. And I just think it's so funny that, you know, Scott, someone who he's been ragging on from the beginning, like a little rival of his own. I think it's almost a pride thing too, of like, well, Scott did that. Well, yeah, if the 100-year-old man did that. Kiss in front of everybody. You can go to your boyfriend's cottage in the woods for two weeks.

SPEAKER_00

I think I can let myself love someone.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. And pack your bags because we're going to the cottage.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god, everyone, let's just take a minute. Let's just take a minute to reminisce of that week when we were all preparing to go to the cottage. All the different here's what I'm packing, here's my shopping list for the cottage. We're so excited to go to the cottage with Shane and Ilio.

SPEAKER_01

Polar opposite from after we didn't kiss. You know, this is all just happy, happy, joy, joy.

SPEAKER_00

Just so much excitement, just like we really and it just like, I was like, you know what? I feel I feel so excited. I'm ready to relax with them.

SPEAKER_01

Dude, I can I just say, like, I'll believe in anything has become a gay anthem now. Yes. And I can't remember. I'm so sorry if I'm repeating myself. The story of my own connection to this song. I don't know if I'm not sure. I don't think you've said this, no. So it's such an Oprah full circle moment for me personally, because the very first fanfic writer I ever got into also had hockey fics, and that's how I learned about like, oh, hockey fanfic is a big thing. And this same author, a lot of times authors will not a lot, sometimes authors will attach songs with their fics. So this author, and this was like the 2000s, mind you, and they attached this song. And I got introduced through this hockey fanfic writer to this band, and I loved this song, and I have a few other of their songs that I love. So having it come back now in 2025 and it being like the hockey gay anthem is just like very mind-blowing to me. And it was all meant to be. And that's why this is why like this show just really felt like it was for us, us gay kids who have been writing fanfiction, who have been loving these stories. It's just, it's just such a treat to get such a well-done and clearly well-loved project that was made by us and for us. Anyway, that's my own connection to the song, and it's a great song, and I'm so happy that it's become so popular now and like associated with gay. That's great.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I think it's just it's such a well-done scene. It's so incredible, it's so powerful. It hits every time.

SPEAKER_01

Shout out to Anna Green. Three of you might know what I'm talking about.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, I mean, I'm just so excited to go to the cottage I somebody made a like a dubstep beat based on I'm going to the c I'm coming to the cottage. Like we have t-shirts that say, Will you come to my cottage this summer?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, my one of my best friends gifted us two matching shirts that say that, and I love it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I'm so excited to talk about the next episode, the last episode of the show of the season. I know. And now we gotta read these books. Oh my gosh, but boy oh boy, do we gotta read these books? We gotta make some notes. Um, but yeah, we're so excited to see you all in the cottage. I don't know about you, but I could have watched a 24-7 live stream of Shane and Ilya at the cottage for episode six.

SPEAKER_01

And I love how we'll get into it. I love the pacing and like the way they they told it. It felt like a mini movie on its own. It's yeah, it's really, really good. I'm so excited. I just can't wait. But uh, until then, get on the ice and kiss your gay boyfriend to uh an indie song.
