SPEAKER_01

Hello everyone, this is Rainbow They HD. And I'm Em, and this is Sex Cells, a heated rivalry podcast. And today we are talking about episode six, The Cottage. I'm coming to the cottage. I'm coming to the cottage. I'm coming in your ass. Whoa! Damn it, I didn't have another one. You didn't know comedy comes in threes, so don't worry, there'll be more lyrics you didn't ask for. Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I could talk about every single frame of this episode.

SPEAKER_01

I know. We're gonna have a fun time trying to narrow this down. This episode really feels like the last chapter of a getting together fic where they just get to like be together and bask in it for a little bit. What are our tags for this episode? The tags are fluff once again, hashtag love confessions, hashtag getting together, hashtag meet the parents.

SPEAKER_00

Hashtag domestic. I can't believe we didn't add that one. Yeah, this is very domestic. But yes, meet the parents. Oh, I'm so excited to talk about literally everything we have to talk about. And we gotta start with Scott's little speech at the beginning. Yes, we do, which like I I feel like when the episode starts and you're like not immediately in the cottage with Scott and Ilya, or Scott and Ilya, with Ilya Witches. Ilya. Ilya witches. Um no, but when you're not immediately in the cottage, it's just like what the fuck? But I think Scott's speech is important. I think it's a reminder of like why he chose to stay closeted for so long, why Shane and Ilya are still closeted, and why it's such a big deal, like, you know, for them to meet each other at the airport, and why Shane says later on, like, I don't want to come out. And I think those are all valid reasons. Um I also just have to point out that they could not afford a crowd. Um, and that is why Kip is in the bar and not at the MLH awards.

SPEAKER_01

I'm screaming.

SPEAKER_00

Um, I mean, I think they, if they really wanted to, they probably could have had him maybe like backstage watching watching Scott. But I think narratively it could be important for him to be with his support system.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was nice to see uh all his friends so happy for him.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, Elena is just like squeezing him.

SPEAKER_01

Uh Elena, who has been such a bad bitch this whole time and is just smiling ear to ear and squeezing her kip. Everyone's so excited for him. I love that. But yeah, no, this scene is very reflective, I think, of the effects of real life too, because Scott talks about fans reaching out to him, and I'm pretty sure the actor had a similar experience. Um, and then yeah, just like when he's talking about how he came out in a ridiculously public way and like someone kind of clears their throat in the audience. Yeah, I can imagine the online discourse that happened in universe.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, well, because like when he says, like, you know, he talk he starts the speech talking about how he won the cup, and he says, like, that's not the only thing that happened, and we get a few cheers, but then when he says gay, nothing except that throat clear, because it's like it is just still like ooh, this is still the hockey world. And I mean, I I think we could talk about the fact that he won MVP. That's what his he won the MVP award, that's why he's giving this speech. And I mean, d like coming out as gay and still being put up for that award. Like, I don't know if that would happen in the real world. And and I think Francis Arno, who plays Scott, did a good job um with this speech. I think he really does a good job of just that, like, hey, I've had to deal with homophobia my entire life. Um, and it's really lonely to be in the closet.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, his speech really uh struck a nerve in me, I would say. And I love how he says, you know, there's one thing stronger than fear, and that's love, and I think that's very true. Really nice way to carry forward from the last episode and and end Scott and Kipp's tale. It's like, thank you for doing this. Now we get the cottage. Now we get a tense airport pickup scene. Dude, this really I I love watching situationship stuff because I feel the nerves of it, and like we were talking about it, really took me back to waiting for you at the airport that first time and how I felt like I was going to fully shit my pants.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

And they have on top of it this fear of being recognized, but then also just the relationship, like, oh, we're doing like a next level type of thing here.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like we were already calling each other our like girlfriends, you know, we knew what this was. We didn't start out as like a situationship, we can never admit that we feel things for each other, yeah, kind of thing. So it's it is like a whole other level when it's like, oh, like it's like we're actively choosing to do the tuna melt thing and like we know what it means, and there's no confusion about that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I love the way they break the tension though with this very like married couple. All Ilya does is ask like what kind of car it is, and Shane's like, what? It's good in the snow.

SPEAKER_00

It's it's so their dynamic. That's what I think is so great about this show is the consistency with the way they interact, is like they always feel like they're in character.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, Shane is like this this little dork that's easy to rile up, and Ilya enjoys riling him up.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. And then and I said Shane's so me because like he's so nervous in the car that he's just like uh so and he just starts talking about the plan for their vacation where he's like, We've got the food, we're prep, this is all the stuff. We're gonna relax.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I feel like when Ilya he kind of admits like because I also like how Shane is like, I just want to relax with you for once. And I feel like that's even deeper than like I just want us to be ourselves.

SPEAKER_00

Well, Ilya, he he take tries to take it to the sexual place of like, oh, we're gonna relax, are we? Like it's like you know, we're gonna be fucking, and Shane is having none of that anymore. He's like, that's not what we're doing here. Like, I want to relax with you, I want to spend time with you just as a person, not as my rival, not as my fuck buddy, but just as you know, my boyfriend.

SPEAKER_01

I want to put down all these fucking pretenses and bullshit, and then I feel like it really breaks when Ilya is like admits that it's a little terrifying, yes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I love that. I really love the the tension breaking, and I feel like that Ilya, for the first like half of this episode, Ilya I feel like is just like a feral animal getting used to like being in someone's home where it's just like, oh, okay, yeah, this is it's safe for me to open up, it's safe for me to be vulnerable. This person who like I probably hasn't said I love you to anyone since his mom died. Um, like maybe Svetlana in like a friend way, but like who just has never felt so safe and cared for in his adult life. And now he and now Shane is giving that to him. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Shane tells him that they'll be left alone. He told his parents he was going on a silent retreat. And this is another great moment that I feel like shows their dynamic and also how well they know each other, because obviously Ilya gets a laugh out of this. He always like, yeah, it sounds fake. If it were anyone else but you, it would sound fake.

SPEAKER_00

And I like the foreshadowing of like no one will bother us, not even your parents. Which, like, as soon as they mention parents, it's like, oh god. And we already know that the that Shane's cottage that he had built for himself is right down the road from the cottage he spent his summers going to growing up.

SPEAKER_01

Like, buddy, you have a close relationship with parents who live down the street and you don't think they're gonna just show up unannounced for some dumbass reason.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, absolutely. Um, so then we arrive at the beautiful cottage.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, and Shane is giving Ilya a hard time about uh playing with his bruised ribs and insists on carrying his bag. Very dumb, very wise. Very, yes, very, very husband-coded. And we get more nervous talking because he's just kind of like talking about the amenities. He's like, I have my own well. You can see it.

SPEAKER_00

He's like, Can I give you a tour? I don't even know. A tour said Canadianly. Um, yeah, and like in Ilya, I feel like it just keeps dropping. Like, hey, I know like every single thing I've ever learned about you has been catalogued in my mind. Like, I know you had this cabin built. I've watched your documentary. I I watched the documentary. Yeah, I remember everything you said about your parents. Which I think is interesting because we've seen and we've talked about, you know, Shane trying to give these these little bits of himself over at Ilya and like let Ilya get to know him, and Ilya keeps shutting that down. But he's remembered everything.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. And they start kissing, and you know, they're eager to get to it. And Ilya is like, yeah, I haven't been with anyone else either since the last time, and Shane is overjoyed to hear this.

SPEAKER_00

And we talked about this when we did our episode rewatch, and I do maintain that I think one of the places where the show fails a little is in really showing us rather than telling us that Ilya is like a playboy. Like, I didn't really like except for episode four when he's like in Russia and like partying with Svetlana and the girls, I don't really get any indication that when Shane and Ilya aren't fucking, Ilya is going out and fucking like a bunch of women. Yeah. And I think in the book it's that's made pretty clear. And I think book readers know that. But I think if you're just watching the show, it'd be easy to forget. Cause yeah, like they reference it a lot, but I wouldn't even say they reference it a lot. I say they reference it like a little bit. Um, but I I just don't know if that's really like shown that much. And so I feel like the impact of Shane being like, Really, you haven't been with anyone. Especially we see him turn down like the one other gay boy that's propositioned him. Yeah, so it's a little bit like, oh, okay, well, yeah, no, he hasn't. Um and so you kind of just have to like accept that. Um, and I'm not entirely sure how they would have done it. I'm not trying to say that the show is bad for that or anything.

SPEAKER_01

No, I think it's one of those things where you know, you're gonna lose something when you go from a book to a show translation, and especially if you're only given six fucking episodes.

SPEAKER_00

So it's like, how do you show that? Yeah, it's like it's like, I don't know, maybe like uh like Shane like scrolling through the tabloids of like Ilya being pictured with girls or something. They I think there's at least one or two things they could have like slipped in there. Um, but you know, that that's the only complaint you'll have from me this episode.

SPEAKER_01

Right. And I just love how Shane's like, I have an idea that I totally just thought of. What if we were truthful about our feelings?

SPEAKER_00

Which is so he's been wanting this for so long. He's like, this is all I've wanted from you is just like just to be honest about what we think and how we feel. And Illya's like, I can try, I can try to do that. Yeah, I think I feel safe enough to do that now. But I would say honesty and vulnerability are big themes of this episode. And I feel like we really are just moving through this chronologically, which I'm okay with, and I don't think anyone's gonna be mad about. It's hard not to. Because every moment is just so good. Again, I could have watched a 24 or 7 live stream of them just spending time in the cottage. For real.

SPEAKER_01

And I I really do like how we move through it. So then they're they're being playful again with Shane taking into his room. My autistic ass was like, wait, they're really gonna sleep in separate rooms. No, it's just the banter, it's the banter, and like Ilya says, I think I know how the staff likes to be treated after all these years, which is part of the banter, but also a reminder that like it's easy to forget when you're watching because we fly through the years so quickly. But Ilya and Shane have known each other for a decade now. And though emotionally there's been that distance, there's still like this history and intimacy built up, which is why I think they can kind of nosedive into this boyfriendhood because there's this like knowing between them, demonstrated earlier by the ginger ale and everything. Like you're boyfriends before you even it's snuck up on you.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, you've been boyfriends for quite a while now. And I'm excited to talk. There's like another moment later that we'll get to that I think really highlights the like, okay, you guys have been ready to be boyfriends for a while. Um, and I love first of all, Shane is like edging Ilya. He's like, okay, no, we're not doing it on the couch. No, get we're I need to shut the shades. And then Ilya is just like, no, no, no, like open the windows, which I think is interesting because I I've kind of touched on like when it's when Shane is in control of the space, the windows are like the curtains are closed. And Ilya is a little bit more like having the the curtains open. And Shane lets it this time because they're alone, they're isolated. What they don't know is David's in the woods. David is in the woods watching them. Um, but yeah, but then we get this um parallel scene between the first time they hook up and then this time where they're like in the shadow and then in the dark, and Shane's going down on Ilya versus like now they're in the light with the windows wide open. And it's just beautiful imagery.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, and then we get my next thing is the eight burgers.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, we have to talk about the eight burgers. Shane, you autistic darling. I love you. You can cut the recipe in half.

SPEAKER_01

No, and I love the little moment of when he's like, leave me alone, and Ilya's like, no, and he's like, No, I'm done leaving you alone, actually.

SPEAKER_00

And he has that little like whininess to his voice. Also, I just have to talk about the outfit he's wearing. Yeah. Because I lived in a tourist town growing up, and we had quite a few, we had people from all over the world who would come and it was a beach town. And the amount of like Eastern European men who would wear that like polo shirt with like either the tiniest little shorts you've ever seen or like full-on basketball shorts. When I saw Ilya wearing that outfit, I was like, that is the that is like the Russian vacation uniform. That is so funny. And maybe that's incorrect.

SPEAKER_01

And then uh Ilya asks Shane about his parents.

SPEAKER_00

Uh yeah, and like like such a reversal is happening in this scene where it's Ilya being like wanting to get to know Shane and like talking about his parents and asking about and Shane being kind of caging, being like, ah, let's end this conversation.

SPEAKER_01

You don't do you like that? Yeah, that was a great recap of the situation. Ilya said, tell me about your hot mom and your boring dad.

SPEAKER_00

McGill.

SPEAKER_01

Which I I was impressed because McGill is a good school, but you know, Ilya doesn't know about Canadian schools.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I think if you live in North America, you're like, oh yeah, I know. Isn't that where uh Wilson from House went?

SPEAKER_01

Um But there is a um I think a bit of a foreshadowing of season two moment here because they talk about his parents, and like you say, like Shane's not super into it, and he kind of brushes off the conversation because they get into like Ilya asks him, Do your parents know that you're gay? And he's like, Well, I can't tell them. And he's like, Well, you can leave me out of it, all this. And Shane's like, well, it doesn't really matter, and brushes Ilya's hand off. And I've seen people say that this is kind of a glimpse into how Shane's gonna be. So I'm excited. Hashtag terrified.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, we'll we'll we'll see how it goes. Um, I do think this is interesting. I also think it's interesting that like Shane was the one who who was like, let's be honest about how we think and how we feel. And then he's kind of not there. And I think Ilya's like, what the fuck, man? But I think Ilya probably also recognizes that like it is hard, like with your parents. And like, I wonder if there's also a little bit of Ilya, like he said, I wish my dad could have known me. And I wonder if he like recognizes like Shane, your parents are different from my family. Like, you you do want your parents to know you, I think. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Now it's time for a romantic fire.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, and Ilya, first of all, by the time you're done, you love that fire, you don't want to go. Um, and I will say, sitting around a fire is like a core human thing. Like, we have been doing that for a millennia, like as a species.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, yes, Ilya at the beginning is like what we just said here. This is fun, but by the end, he doesn't want to go inside. But this is such an important scene because we really get a deep conversation where Ilya reveals that like his mother killed him herself when he was 12 and he found her, which is so horrific.

SPEAKER_00

And the performances here are just great. I like the monotone voice that Connor uses when Ilya is saying, like, my mother didn't suck, like she she died, it wasn't by accident. She accidentally swallowed a bottle of pills. Like it's so like he is being so reserved because the emotion behind that is just like too much. I don't think he could like he has to keep it as like flat as possible or he will break.

SPEAKER_01

And people have pointed out the way Ilya describes her, she was so funny and beautiful, she was so sad. My dad was so hard on her. He's also describing himself.

SPEAKER_00

Well, and it made me think of when I was thinking about this, I thought about in episode two at the Olympics when his dad is like, Who tied this for you? Your mother, like she's so like like he probably berated Adriana for not being able to tie the tie properly.

SPEAKER_01

That kind of family dynamic where you're just casually like mean and critical all the fucking time. It wears you down.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And I also, when we were doing our re-watch, I really paid attention to Hudson's performance because like I always pay so much attention to Ilya because like he's the focal point of the scene, but like you really see Shane just like feeling for Ilya and just feeling like you can see the sadness that he feels for this man, and like the like he can't imagine that. Like, and he slowly starts like playing with his hair and like comforting him, and it's just so sweet. And again, like Ilya just feels so safe here. And then we go, are we ready to move on?

SPEAKER_01

Do we want to say anything about Ilya bringing up Rose or like oh my god, Ilya talks a big game about like you should have a girlfriend and blah blah blah. But fucking Shane sleeps with a girl twice and he is acting like the most jealous girlfriend. Not so gay, you can't fuck Rose Laundry. His little like sniff that he does. And the way he's staring at his phone, like, I know what you are.

SPEAKER_00

I just like we see it, we see it, we know, we get you're jealous. Like, it's so interesting. And then yeah, the loon thing, like Ilya's on edge, he doesn't know what a loon, and he he's a city boy. He is like, this is the most time he's spent in in nature in his life. Um, but yeah, and then later, and I like the tension break of like they're having this like heavy emotional moment, and then they hear the loon again, and Ilya's like, oh my god, but then he like they both laugh about it, yeah, and then they want to stay outside, like he wants to stay with his head in Shane's lap.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and they wake up the next morning and Ilya's like, I like you. And Shane says, I like you too. They're saying their thoughts, baby, and then we cut to video game time. I just love their banter, it always feels so real the way Shane is like, no, you're not anything.

SPEAKER_00

Like, I'm on the fucking game, which you know Shane bought that game because Ilya was on the cover of it.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, a hundred percent. Oh my god, I didn't even think about that. But yes, and then this fucking phone call with Hayden. I was saying, like, Hayden and Shane's friendship is so giving female friendship because I feel like any other guy would be like, Oh, it's Hayden, you know, send a voicemail, whatever. It's like, oh, he just had a baby, I gotta talk to him. Yeah, we gotta chat. It's very, it's very sweet, but also you immediately got a blowjob on the phone call.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, which is like so wild. I love the little like exhibitionist Shane thing that we're getting here.

SPEAKER_01

Dude, it was he is so again, we see that Shane's no doesn't always mean no in these circumstances because he's literally like stop as he's getting into a better position for Ilya to suck his dick.

SPEAKER_00

And and I love like I love Ilya just like because he is trying to like, he's clearly trying to get Shane hard, but then Shane's like, stop it. And he's like, Okay. He's like, I won't touch you, but if you get hard, then I get to do. Yeah. Well, he's like, I'll make you a deal. And Shane agrees to that deal.

SPEAKER_01

Shane's like, what you don't know is I'm already half chubbed.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, well, and I do want to say the straight guy podcast that I listened to did not understand this moment because they kept being like, because they like Ilya says, like, I won't touch you, but then he immediately like puts his head and his hands on Shane's thighs, and it's like, no, you don't read enough fanfiction. He means I won't touch your dick to get you hard. But like if I'm just here and I'm playing around with you a little and you just happen to get hard because you're horny, then I'm gonna go down on you. And Shane is into it, and the slapping of the face, I think that's what got the intimacy coordinator to like walk away.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. She's like, I j it was so funny. Yeah, that that like that like out of context, but came out that the intimacy coordinator had to walk away, and people thought, oh, the scene is so hot. No, it's just the silly little slap that made her laugh.

SPEAKER_00

Well, because of I think that makes sense too, because that's an intimacy coordinator. It's your job. Yeah, like intimacy is your job. Like, you're not gonna get like so like flustered about the intimacy. It's gonna be something like funny like that that gets you to be like, oh my god, I wasn't expecting that. Right. And like Hayden, like, is this gonna come up? Is this gonna come up at all?

SPEAKER_01

Hayden knows. Yeah, I can't with the scene. He's literally like, um, it's Amazon. Like, okay, if Hayden's either the dumbest fuck in the world, or like I'm supposed to really suspend my disbelief here.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, maybe you know, he did just have a baby, so maybe he's sleep-deprived. Yeah. Um, I mean, at the very least, he probably thinks Shane's getting blowdrop from a girl. He probably thinks Lily is at the cabin with him. And he's right. In a way, he's right. He's not wrong about that. He just doesn't know who Lily is.

SPEAKER_01

And afterwards, Shane is like, why was that so hot? And Illy is like, because you like to be bad. But Shane says, That's not what this is, though. This isn't our usual dom sub-silliness. I mean, it is, but it's more than that.

SPEAKER_00

Well, and I like that because it think makes me think of Sasha and the whole, like, oh, you like trouble, trouble used to get you off. Like, we both shared the same secret. Like, Illy has always felt his whole life since he realized he was into guys, that it can only be a secret, it can only be trouble, it can only be being bad. Like being gay is being bad, and you have to be like it has to be secretive. But Shane is saying, like, no, that's not what this is. I'm into you. I like you. I like spending time with you, I like doing things with you. And Illy is like, Oh, oh, okay.

SPEAKER_01

And it's really nice.

SPEAKER_00

And then we get some knee slaps and it cuts to them playing soccer, which I love because like they're like it makes no sense for them to be playing soccer, which can you tell we're from the United States. Um, but it's I think in the book, from my understanding, Shane had like a like a hockey rink built, like an outdoor, like something built like at his cottage and they're playing hockey. They didn't have the budget for. And Jacob Tiernia was like, you know what's cheaper than that? A soccer ball.

SPEAKER_01

And this is interesting because the talks of future really begin here because Ilya is really the first one to float this idea of like maybe he. Joins a Canadian team.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's so interesting. I think this is still, I think Ilya is still Ilya, so he's still saying one thing and kind of like there's a subtext to it where he's saying, like, maybe a Canadian team. I would love not to have a Russian passport. Like, I want to live in Canada near you. I don't want to have to worry about being taken away from you. Yes. I could marry Svetlana. Like I could get an American passport and a beard, and this could work. Which that's jumping ahead a little bit.

SPEAKER_01

Well, and we can, because that's kind of my next note too, is them being on the couch uh locking toes together while Ilya comes up with the worst idea ever.

SPEAKER_00

And Shane looks ready to commit murder right then and there. Dude, the death stare.

SPEAKER_01

He's like, if you bring up this bitch one more fucking time.

SPEAKER_00

He's like, you keep bringing up Svetlana. I heard her name on that phone call.

SPEAKER_01

And he says he's like, I mean, you could just marry Svetlana then, like for real, because you like girls.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's it's very romantic because like Shane is saying he's like, you like well, and I I I and this is not to like you know say anything about you just using the word girls, but I like that they keep saying women. Like I like that Shane says, but you like women, and like Ilya says, I like women, because I do think there's something to be said for like, you know, always calling women like girls.

SPEAKER_01

A hundred percent. Like such a thing in our rape culture language that is hard to catch sometimes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and so I really appreciate the writing there of like, no, these like these are grown men and they're talking about grown women. Um, so I I really appreciate that. And yeah, and just like I could repeat the line's verbatim right here, where he's just saying, like, and Illy, I think is like it's so interesting because he's using that like playful, like teasing thing that he does with Shane, where he's like, I'm gonna rile you up a little bit more because I see the look in your eyes, and I want you to be a little mad at me. Where he's like, I like women, and these they're so beautiful and they love me so much, and like, but I'm always thinking of you and like and your weak backhand and your your stupid car.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and Shane is and and like Elliot's like, I have this problem, and Shane's like, Do you want that problem to go away?

SPEAKER_00

I don't ever want that problem to ever go away. The two ever ever, ever, ever, never, ever, ever go away! Oh my god.

SPEAKER_01

But despite that reassurance, cut to Shane sitting up in the dark of night in bed in silence, thinking about how he's going to keep Ilya from marrying Svetlana.

SPEAKER_00

Ilya said I could marry Svetlana, and somewhere in Shane's brain, it went over my dead fucking body and then just started scribbling on the whiteboard. How do we get, how do we do this, how do we do this? And then he's like, he has like the plan has formed, he's figured it out, and then he wakes Ilya up in the middle of the night.

SPEAKER_01

And I I I was looking at my notes again because uh uh and being reminded of how he's like, don't marry Svetlana, just don't. We'll figure something out. I'll figure it out in about six hours.

SPEAKER_00

Just you wait. And then he does and he comes up with this plan, which I don't know enough about hockey to know if this would work.

SPEAKER_01

Well, what's so crazy about this is he has to basically fabricate a a believable friendship. They like that people he has to make people believe that they even want to be in the same room together because people are so like intense about this rivalry. And Shane even makes the point, like, we're not fucking wrestlers, like, what do we have to keep this up forever? Like, we can just so yeah, he comes up with this pretty cool plan of like starting a hockey club or something together to raise charity, and it can be a little like it's not a bullshit charity, but it's a it's a kind of two birds, one stone kind of thing.

SPEAKER_00

And I do like there is a little bit of the rivalry there because he's like, we can tell them, like, I approached you and Ilya's or or I approached you.

SPEAKER_01

Shane's like, whatever. And Shane's like, we'll still play hard against each other on the ice, like a little dork and Ilya giggle, like I just love Shane in so earnest.

SPEAKER_00

And then and then Shane really brings it to the place of like, and like, so we can do this while we're still playing, and then after we retire, like maybe we can actually be together. And Ilya realizes the weight of this and like realizes what this means, and he says, You really want that with me? And Shane said, like to be together, and Shane says, Yeah, I do so much it scares me, which like that's love, baby. Oh, yeah. Love is terrifying and exhilarating, but terrifying. Yeah, really want that? I just made a whole life plan. Yes, I really want it. Yeah, and then we get and then we get Ilya like tearing up again because he's overwhelmed with the emotion and he tries to turn away because he always wants to like turn away when he's crying because he sh he knows he shouldn't let anyone see him cry. But Shane once again says, No, no, no, look at me. Like I accept you. I will take everything that everything that you are, like even these messy parts, even the sad parts, like I don't mind that you're sad.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And he Ilya gets up and starts kissing Shane and like whispering, I love you in Russian into his skin, which is very romantic. And then he says it in English, and it's like my favorite I love you I've ever heard in a TV show. There's like such a like release to it.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Well, and I like the building, he's like really like like hyping himself up to say it to Shane because he has already said it before in Russian, and I think when he said that to Shane in Russian, he was like, and I'll never ever be able to say this to him in a language he understands. I'll never be able to say this to his face. And now he is looking him in the eye and saying in words he can understand, I love you. And then Shane's brain short circuits, and he goes, Holy shit. Yeah, which I appreciate. And then I think Ilya's like kind of having a freak out moment of just like oh I think he thinks he needs to backpedal, but then Shane is like, I love you too.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, oh my god, I love you so much.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, and then he's like holding Ilya's head against his chest and like gripping his hair. This is what the women come for.

SPEAKER_01

Not the sex, I mean, yes, the sex, but also the holding each other and crying while they confess their love.

SPEAKER_00

It's such a beautiful scene, it's just so gorgeous.

SPEAKER_01

The whole sequence really makes my heart ache because we get that, and then is that we get the morning?

SPEAKER_00

Then we get that beautiful shot of the sun glittering on the water, and they're watching the sunrise, and Ilya has a cigarette, and Shane doesn't seem to say anything to him, but he brings some coffee or tea, and then we transition to like the one actual sex scene we get that's just like them making love, dripping with just like this intensity and like this how did we let this happen?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, but get the fuck out of here.

SPEAKER_00

It's so good, it's so beautiful, it's so intimate. And then we get the afterwards of that, and we get, you know, Shane is still thinking about their plan. He's still, he is a dog with a bone now. Yeah. And then he asks, What was your mother's name? Irina. And then he says, like, we can name the charity after her, and we can do like a hockey school, like a summer camp, and we can give money to mental health organizations like suicide prevention. And then Ilias says something that every single time I watch it, I tear up. It's just too much. Like the feeling in the words, the look on Connor Story's face where he says she would have loved you. And then his voice breaks a little as he says, like I love you. It's like a novelty to him that he gets to say this to Shane. And he still can't believe that he gets to say this to him. And just like the, I think also like the the heartbreak and the heartache of like my mother who I love so much and who loved me, never gets to know you. I'm like gonna cry.

SPEAKER_01

I know I see it in your eyes.

SPEAKER_00

Like, he like I he so wishes, like, I'm sure there's fics out there where Arena lived and they get to like meet each other. I want that. Like, I it's just so heartbreaking. And like, I you know, as somebody who like I love my mother, and like if I couldn't share like the person I love with her and like like get to tell her about you, that would be like just so heartbreaking. Oh well, and then we cut to Ilya doing a handstand in the lake. Just I just I love it so much. Ilya's so real for doing that handstand in the water. He's so me. I just know he's playing mermaids every chance he gets. He's so funny. He's so he's such like he's so childlike and playful. I love it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, especially when he feels comfortable and safe.

SPEAKER_00

And this is the moment that really like really reminds me of just how like it really not reminds me, but it shows just how domestic they're being. Because it's like it's Shane's up on the rock and they talk about the documentary again, and this is where Shine Shane finally catches on that Ilya has watched that. Like, that's like the second to third time he's mentioned it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because he's like, is the is that where you do your yoga or whatever? He's like, wait, how do you know about that?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, and then Ilya tries to play it off, like, oh, I needed to go to sleep. It was so boring. Meanwhile, you were watching it before you went out to the club.

SPEAKER_01

Such a weirdo.

SPEAKER_00

Like you're you were just sitting alone in your living room watching this, and Svetlana was just like, What the fuck are you doing, man? Like, and then we get a moment I love, which is give me kiss. Give me kiss. It's so cute, and it's because it's like because it's Shane being just like you're cold, but then he gives them a kiss anyway. That to me felt like I was like, that's something you and I would do.

SPEAKER_01

They are, they're just very they're like I I've said several times, their dynamic feels very real, and they feel like they've known each other for years and years.

SPEAKER_00

And again, Connor's story and Hudson Williams didn't know each other before this. Yeah. They shot this. Although I will say, all of the stuff at the cottage was shot at the end. It was like the the last thing they they shot, which I appreciate.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think that was a good move.

SPEAKER_00

Um, and then they're then they're going up and they're talking about lunch, and we get pasta, said Canadianly. Ah, which for those of us out there who watched Degrassi, we were already aware that that's how that's how that word is said in the manipulation.

SPEAKER_01

Horror movie cinematography of getting the behind of David's head. Because this is Shane's horror movie.

SPEAKER_00

In the words of Trinity from Love Island, my heart was in my ass crack.

SPEAKER_01

I'm TT. Like, it's just it's so scary. It is. And he watches them make out for a little bit, and then they come in and they're like, uh-uh. And David reaches a level of speed that only you do in the grocery store. Where he is just out that door. He didn't even close the door. I'm surprised there wasn't a David-shaped hole in the door. And which, like, okay, David, I get you, like, oh, you got caught, you want to give him privacy, whatever. But you physically running away is not going to make your son feel very confident about the next conversation you two have.

SPEAKER_00

No, I think, yeah, it's so interesting. I wanted to talk about this. Like, why do you think David leaves like that?

SPEAKER_01

I think because he knew that he invaded his privacy, not on purpose, uh, you know, but but the fact that like he clearly didn't go and tell Yuna everything.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he he really, I think he was just like, oh, I don't know like what to do with this information. I think dads are just really awkward, and so they're gonna run. Yeah, absolutely. And it just like I'd love to know how he had parked the car because by the time Shane gets the door and is watching him drive away, it looked like David had like backed in or something. I'm like, I'm like, how was this? Like, did you have the car running and ready to go?

SPEAKER_01

You can hear you hear the tire squealing in the background, like, oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so he's going and then Shane's freaking out, and Ilya is being like a plus plus boyfriend here. Yeah, just like so supportive. He's just like letting Shane like have his moments and letting Shane have his freak out, not telling him to calm down or anything, but just being like, it's gonna be okay. And I love the like, I I love like if you know, Shane keeps saying this is my nightmare, this isn't an actual nightmare. And Ilya is just saying, like, it's time to wake up. Yes, and when you wake up. And when Shane says he's scared, he's just like, I know it's very scary, but you're so brave. And it's just really beautiful. And I think Ilya's also just saying, like, Shane, they're not gonna hate you, they're not gonna be mad at you.

SPEAKER_01

And this is the thing about fear is like you're afraid of a certain situation, and I think it can become so much bigger in your head. And yes, it's time to wake up, it's time to face it because once you face it, you realize how small it really was, and it was really a big thing in your mind. So now it's time to go face the music.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, and Ilya wears his Boston shirt, which Shane is upset about. And I saw a post or a TikTok somewhere that said that Ilya wearing his Raider shirt was to make him a target for Eunit and David's anger to take some of the heat off of Shane. Which I was which I think totally clocks, like that totally works with Ilya's personality, absolutely. And yeah, and then they go and Shane being like, maybe you should wait in the car.

SPEAKER_01

Dude, Shane's panic is so real. He just is like, I don't know what to do. And the way Ilya's just like, he just makes a face at him.

SPEAKER_00

He's like, Really?

unknown

No.

SPEAKER_00

I came all the way over here after offering to go with you so sweetly.

SPEAKER_01

We have to go in there and stand like two little kids who got in trouble. We foo up. We foo up. It's very much and the way they enter and Shane's like, hey, it's me, your boy Shane. Hey, it's me, Shay. Yeah, it's so awkward, but it's an awkward situation, you know. You really want to be able to choose that moment, and they've all been kind of pushed into it. And and David immediately is like, I'm sorry, I needed my phone charger. And you're just like, What the fuck is happening? Why is my secret crush here?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, why why is my why is my son's arch rival here? Um, because yeah, you I mean, I wonder, like, did David just come back and be like, oh, I couldn't find the charger? Um, and you know, it's just like, okay. And then weirdo. And then all of a sudden she's like, Why is Shane here? I thought he was at a silent retreat. And why is Ilya Rosinoff here? Oh my god, and it's so good. And then like they admit Ilya lovers.

SPEAKER_01

He's trying so hard to be helpful. No, Ilya, that's gross.

SPEAKER_00

I have a sticker that says rivals to lovers, but lovers is crossed out and it says no, Ilya, that's gross. And it's one of my favorite stickers ever. Um, and I think Christina Yang, we have to talk about her performance here as Yuna because I think she's doing such a good job. Her like facial expressions, like when Shane says he's gay, when you know he says like he's with Ilya. I think like you can really see in her head, she's like, Oh, uh, there are so many things I didn't know about my son. Like, why did he not think he could tell me? What what have I done?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think that's what makes her get up from the table and take a moment because yeah, they they reveal that they've been together for not together, but they've been being a thing since before the summer before rookie season. Ilya makes sure to tell them.

SPEAKER_00

He's like, No, no, no, don't get any of the details of our love story incorrect. We have been together since before we were rookies.

SPEAKER_01

Ilya came to stress Shane out some more, really. Um but yeah, and so and this whole scene with her and Shane really breaks my heart.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I you know, like I think she keeps getting overwhelmed and she's walking away, which it's like, you know, like I get she has to do that for her. I think it gives Shane a certain impression of how she's feeling about this. And I think it's like confirming the fears that Shane has had. And that's why we get this scene. Because I can understand why this is a lot for her. Like, she thought she was so in control of everything, she thought she knew her son better than anyone, she thought they were so close, they were a team, he told her everything. But now she learns there's this whole part of his life she hasn't known about for like almost 10 years. And I don't think she feels betrayed by that. No, because she takes ownership of it. Yes, it's clear she feels guilty that her son didn't think he could share this part of himself with her, and that's why we get this beautiful moment.

SPEAKER_01

Well, but this this is a part that makes me tear up every time is when he starts apologizing and saying he tried really hard. Because it really is like, even like for me, like knowing my parents were gonna be cool. Yeah, there's like you really do just have this message, this feeling inside of you that it's wrong. No matter how much support surrounds you, I think sometimes like society has given you the impression that this is wrong, this is inconvenient, this is weird, like your parents are gonna look at you differently now, even if they still love you. And it's such a like high pressure moment, and you all and I also almost felt this need to be like sorry for being different, yeah, which is horrible.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and and I think with Shane, particularly like with hockey, like Yuna is the hockey parent, like she's the one who's like been the most supportive and like maybe even pushing him a little bit when it comes to hockey. And hockey is this very homophobic world. And I wonder if there's just this feeling of like my mom loves this, if he's almost like conflating the two of like you know, my mom loves hockey, this is how hockey feels about being gay. Is my mom gonna feel that way about me? And so he tries to apologize, and like he did try with Rose. He really tried. He was like, I tried to be straight, I tried to do it. And I love again Christina Young's performance where like Una just like when she like realized and she goes, Oh, she like gasps a little and she's like, No, no, no, like you have nothing to apologize for.

SPEAKER_01

And then she apologizes for making him feel, and and this is what I love because I feel like parents have a hard time owning their shit, especially when they didn't. I'm sure Yuna did not mean for her son to not feel like she couldn't come, but she's come to her, but she still apologizes and like I'm sorry I made you feel like you couldn't tell me this.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yeah. And then he doesn't say it's okay, he says I forgive you, which is so important. It's so important that like it's not that she didn't need to apologize for that because I think she did.

SPEAKER_01

And you know, I think about I think she really put a lot of pressure on him, and that played a huge role of like, oh, there's still there's also a pressure to just be normal.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And if I can say, like, I I did I didn't really have to come out to my mom, I just kind of told her about my experiences with women, and like I just my mom was actually not somebody I had to worry about, and and my dad either, but I have an older brother who came out as gay after he graduated high school, and like I wasn't there for any of those coming out moments, but like after talking to him and my my dad, like my dad especially talks about like my brother seems so afraid to tell him, and that was a really reflective moment for my dad of like why is he afraid to tell me this? Like, I love like he I can't believe he doesn't know that like I will love him no matter what, and it's like, well, you know, dad, it's it's hard, like you know, it's why it's so important to not assume you know your child's gender or sexuality, yes, because like then it's just gonna make them so much harder to like tell you that it's like, hey, those expectations you have for me, I'm not going to meet them. And I think with Yuna, like she has expectations for Shane. And I think Shane, like with the Swedish princess thing, she's like, she expects me to be straight, she expects me to get married and have babies like Hayden, and that's not the life I want.

SPEAKER_01

And you put those expectations on yourself because I also had a sibling who came out years before I did. So I knew it would be okay. But I think I was I was the last girl, I was the last hope to just like get married and have the grandchildren. And I think that was part of my kind of guilty feeling as well. It's like, eh, sorry, you don't have any straights actually in the in the lineup.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, sorry, we're uh we're a generation of queers here. Wonder where we got that from.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I know we've got a lot of ancestors just dancing up there, happy that someone broke the curse. And really what Yuna is most mad at is that uh he's with Ilya.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I love, okay, so we go back in, and I like I need a cutscene of what David and Ilya were doing. Were they just talking about like what were they? Were they making dinner together?

SPEAKER_01

Especially because David really hits him with the so there were no other nice boys in hockey you could have gotten with.

SPEAKER_00

In Montreal. He's like, you couldn't have dated any nice boys in Montreal, and it's just like, and I do like the like they try to call him Rosinoff, and he's like, Ilya. He's like, I'm not, I'm not Rosinoff, your son's arch enemy here. Like, I am Ilya, I'm your son's boyfriend. I'm your son's lover. I'm your son's lover. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

And yeah, and I love you because they start to kind of explain this plan of like Ilya is gonna try out for like Ottawa, maybe. And Yuna is more upset, like you leave Boston.

SPEAKER_00

Loyalty's important. Yuna said, traitor ass bitch leaving Boston for my son.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know your pussy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then Shane's like, sorry, my mom loves hockey a bit too much, and Ilya's like, Oh, I see where you get it from. I think we also have to talk about Ilya just absolutely housing that pasta, which again, because it's the end of the shoot, Connor's story is just like, listen, I've been eating nothing but ground beef to have these muscles be popping. I'm eating these carbs like it's nobody's fucking business. And I think they like move the pot in front of his plate so they for continuity, so it's just like just keep eating.

SPEAKER_01

But this is what's crazy to me, because that that food is not piping hot. That's some cold pasta that he's inhaling. He doesn't care, he's hungry. He's hungry. No, it's very cute, and we I do know that like Ilya, his Shane's parents really do embrace Ilya, and there's gonna be some cuteness, I think, in season two that I'm very excited about.

SPEAKER_00

I think we see the seats of that right here. Like, I think Ilya saying to like David, like, oh, this is good vodka. He's like, Shane, why didn't you tell me your dad's not boring like you? I don't know where your boring came from.

SPEAKER_01

Which then brings us, I think, to the very sweet moment where where you know they're talking about the future and it gets, I think it gets overwhelming for Shane, and he puts his head down and Ilya's like, Hold on, let me flex my boyfriend muscles really hard in front of your parents, which I get this this scene felt very fanfic too. This I feel like this happens a lot. But Illy kind of talks him down from the ledge and is like, your parents are here, your boyfriend is here, and then Shane's like, boyfriend, and they have the boyfriend conversation right then and there. Yes, yes. Like, yeah, what what did you guys think was happening here?

SPEAKER_00

It's like, yeah, I think so, probably, yes. Yes, yeah, and it's it is this beautiful moment, like Ilya kind of like looks at David and Yuna, I think, and is just like, I think he, I wonder if he's just like, should I let them handle it? But he's like, No, I I got this, I know how to take care of our boy.

SPEAKER_01

And I feel like the parents share a look too, and and I love that they're like, since rookie season, summer before, like they definitely can see that there's very much a real love there. And I'm sure it just took him a second to be like, wait a minute. Because I mean, yeah, that's gotta be such a like not only okay, yes, we've confirmed he's gay, that's not much of a surprise. Rosanoff! When did that like oh my god, I would I would be like, you have to f if I was like Shane's sister, I'd be like, sit down and tell me fucking everything starting from 2008.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, absolutely. And I do wonder, did when does Yuna realize the that when she ran into Ilya in the hallway, he was going to see Shane? When does she wake up in a cold sweat?

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. A hundred percent.

SPEAKER_00

And also we we haven't mentioned this yet, but Yuna being like, so brand deals. Oh my gosh. Like, I think they'll really hop on board. Pride month is coming up. Yeah. And but I think it's very important that we get Shane saying, like, I don't want to come out right now. And I think that's something I feel like before the show was over, especially with Scott coming out at the end of episode five, I feel like I was seeing some criticisms of like, oh, the show's trying to imply that like you should come out. Like it's always important to come out. And it's like, first of all, the show isn't over, so you don't actually know everything the show's trying to say to you. Um, Scott made a choice to come out, like for his own reasons, and Shane and Illy are choosing not to come out for their own reasons, and both of those are valid. It's not wrong for Shane to not want that spotlight on him. He already has the weight of being one of the only Asian hockey players in the league. You think he wants to add like being the gay Asian hockey player on top of that?

SPEAKER_01

You know, where's the nuance? Because yeah, it's like you say one thing, so you must mean a bunch of other things. I think if you can come out and you do have a platform, you should because I think it is really important to see that visibility. I think visibility is really, really important. That doesn't mean if you don't come out because you don't feel safe to that, that's a bad thing. Don't piss me off.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's like Scott is like closer to the end of his career. Like he he doesn't have the supportive family system that he's looking for. He's realized that like he it's just a very different situation. And it is important that Scott comes out because that is alias says him coming out changed things for him. And we saw that happen in the moment, and then we hear it here, and like he says something to Scott. I wonder what he said. I'm sure I wonder if we get, I don't know, I wonder if we get something like that in the books or anything. But like it it was a big deal and it really opened it up for him. And I think Ilya's a little bit more like, we'll just stay a secret until we retire. And like I think he's just like, okay, whatever we want to do. And I think he doesn't feel the same kind of pressure that Shane does.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, especially because, you know, now that his parents are dead, I think there's a special kind of weight that comes off your shoulders when you're not living for your parents anymore.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he's cut off his family. Like he really, he's like, I'm ready to like, I'm ready to stay here in North America. I'm ready to be close to you. Like, and we kind of see with when they're leaving, you know, he's like, Thank you for pasta. And like they said that they'll text them both. Like, they got Ilya's number. Like, I'm so excited for the Yuna, David, Ilya interactions we're going to get. Like, we like please give us as much as you can, Jacob. I want to see it because Ilya deserves it. He deserves a loving family, and I think that's what he's gonna get with the Hollanders.

SPEAKER_01

I'm nervous, but I'm very excited for season two.

SPEAKER_00

It's just so, and then they get in the car and they they're riding off into the sunset as the and the credits are just playing over them being cute together. And I think it's like the show had no idea they were getting a second season when they rapped.

SPEAKER_01

I really think no matter how season two ends up, season one was a good fucking season of television. I like how they ended it.

SPEAKER_00

Like as close to perfect as I think you can get.

SPEAKER_01

Like, and I heard that like the first time they did that scene, they were much more solemn. But it's really more of a hopeful ending. So they take it again, and like you can see, especially if you stick around for all of it, by the end they're really like joking around with each other, and Shane grabs Ilya's little face and like, oh, it's just so good. And I like that we, you know, they're driving into the sunset with a lot of hope. And that's how I like my gay shows to end.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yes, it's so fucking good. I can't believe we got to have this. Just a big wow, thanks to everyone involved. Yes. And I can't believe we get more. Yes. I can't believe we get more. I did want to, before we end this, I just kind of wanted to shout out. I know we've like, as we've been going, we've talked about the actors and some of the people in the crew. Um, I just want to mention a few of the actors we haven't highlighted. Jackie Pike, who we get very little of, but she's played by Camilla Kowal. Um, apologies if I'm saying any of these names correctly. Hayden is paid played by Callan Potter. Um, and then Carter Vaughn is played by Colton Stewart. I want to shout out the DP, the director of photography, Jackson Parnell, the costume designer, Hannah Pueley. I think she did a really good job of, you know, showing like how their outfits change over time, of like showing off like their different styles. The head makeup artist, Joan Chell. I think the hair and the makeup showing them like they really look younger in the first episode versus the cottage, they really look older. I think they did a great job there. The cinematographer, Ashley Iris Gill, woo-woo, we love a female cinematographer. And then the uh two like head editors, Veronique Barbe and Arthur Turnwasky. Again, apologies if I mispronounce any of those names, but I just think they all deserve their flowers. And again, a big wow thanks to all of you.

SPEAKER_01

Great job, everybody.

SPEAKER_00

And we're not done yet.

SPEAKER_01

We're gonna talk about books next week.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I and I guess I was planning on doing an episode for Game Changers and an episode for Heated Rivalry, but you seem to think we're gonna do both books in one episode. Is that what you're thinking?

SPEAKER_01

That's not what I'm implying. Okay. I did figure we'd have a conversation. I actually was thinking about this though the other day. And and who knows? I think we'll read the books and see what we have to say about them. And it might be able to all fit in one, but like it might be two. I don't know. I haven't you've started to read them, I have yet to read them. So we'll see. We we'll probably I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know, but uh you know what I do know is I fucking love this show.

SPEAKER_01

And you're gonna get at least one more, if not two more, episodes out of us.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely, and then we'll go on hiatus, and then when season two starts coming around, we'll figure out what we're gonna do.

SPEAKER_01

We might we might be watching week to week with you guys. I think that'd be fun.

SPEAKER_00

We might, I kind of want to read the other books in between Heated Rivalry and the long game, and maybe do like before season two starts, like just do like one episode talking about those books and like things that have happened, and if we've seen anything from Shane and Ilya or even Scott and Kip in those books, um, and then we can jump into season two. And I I think it's April is when it's supposed to April next year.

SPEAKER_01

Bro, that's like tomorrow.

SPEAKER_00

If only, but yeah, I am so excited. I mean, I think I don't it's gonna be hard to follow up this season, I think, but I really believe in these storytellers. You know, they I think they have the same size budget, so it's not like they're gonna be like go above and beyond in a way that I think could make it worse. I'm I'm excited to see where it goes.

SPEAKER_01

This was a great way to spend Pride Month. I'm saying it now, because I think this will come out actually in the beginning of July.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, this will come out in July, but we're towards this is our last recording in Pride Month.

SPEAKER_01

So, guys, if you can take your gay loved one to a cottage and have gay sex and say fuck you to the straight people.

SPEAKER_00
